FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CANCELLATION OF
THE 2020 CONESUS LAKE ASSOCIATION SPONSORED EVENTS
WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF THE LAKE OF FIRE?
- The “Lake of Fire” is an annual event dating back to the 1930s organized by the Conesus Lake Cottagers Association, now known as the Conesus Lake Association (CLA). The flare distribution is organized each year by the CLA Board of Directors and enacted by the Section Supervisors and Lake Representatives in each area delivering information on the CLA and flares to residents around the lake. In support of the mission of the CLA, to promote the safety and wellness of those who live on and use Conesus Lake, this year’s July 3rd CLA sponsored Lake of Fire events have officially been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
WHAT IS THE HARM IN HOSTING THE EVENT THIS YEAR?
- Orchestrating the lake of fire involves coordination and face to face interaction with over 100 representatives of the CLA and to each of the 1400 households around the lake; which, at this point introduces unnecessary risks to these individuals.
- Vitale and Long Point parks attract 1,000s of viewers to view the Lake of Fire and fireworks – people cannot social distance at that volume and they would not only put our community at risk, but also the employees of the parks and Sheriff’s Department.
- This event attracts many visitors from not only the Livingston County area, but outside of the county and NY State. With so many nearby larger Counties and Cities canceling events through the summer, the CLA not canceling this event, may even attract more visitors, potentially increasing the risk to our community.
WILL THE CLA PREVENT RESIDENTS FROM HAVING GATHERINGS, BONFIRES, AND LIGHTING FLARES ON JULY 3RD LIKE USUAL?
- The CLA has no jurisdiction or enforcement authority on private property. However, we do encourage the all residents to abide by the Governor’s directives in effect on July 3rd. We all know that COVID-19 is highly contagious and potentially deadly to many in our lake community. Please stay safe and protect those around you.
WHY DID THE CLA HAVE TO CANCEL IN APRIL, WHY NOT WAIT UNTIL LATER?
- The event requires the procurement of thousands of flares, which must be purchased in advance and in order to coordinate the distribution of these flares with our Supervisors and Representatives.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO OUR FLARES AND DIRECTORY THAT MEMBERS HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR?
- The Board of Director’s is currently evaluating the best course of action regarding flares. Since the 2020 flares are not being purchased the BOD is considering options for distribution next year instead.
- Directories for all members will be mailed as usual. Members who have not renewed yet, may do so on the website link https://woa.wufoo.com/forms/conesus-lake-association-membership-form/ and directories will be mailed.
WILL THE LAKE OF FIRE BE HELD IN 2021?
- The CLA has every intention of supporting a Lake of Fire event in 2021.
WILL VITALE AND LONG POINT PARK BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC ON JULY 3RD?
- The Town Parks are under the jurisdiction of the respective Towns, please refer to their particular web sites.
WILL THE LAKE OF FIRE BE RESCHEDULED LATER THIS YEAR?
- Due to the long history of holding the Lake of Fire in July, and due to the uncertainty of the COVID 19 situation, the CLA Board has decided to cancel the CLA sponsored events entirely for the year 2020.
WILL CLA BE SELLING FLARES?
- No. The CLA will not be selling flares in 2020.
HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR MEMBERSHIP IF NO ONE WILL BE DELIVERING FLARES?
WILL THERE BE A FIREWORKS DISPLAY AT NORTH END?
- The Fireworks display at the north end is an entirely privately run operation and not sponsored by the CLA.
WILL REFUNDS FOR A & C BOOTHS BE REFUNDED?
- The 2020 Arts and Crafts festival held each year in July has also been canceled. Full refunds will be sent to those vendors who have already paid.
WILL THE ANNUAL BOAT PARADE BE HELD LATER IN THE SUMMER?
- At present, the CLA plans to host the annual boat parade on the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend, which this year is Sunday, September 6th.
