Project Description:

There are efforts led by NYSFOLA, Finger Lakes Institute, and PRISM in cooperation with NYSDEC to help identify and track invasive species that are literally in our lakes. This can include all kinds of species from Macrophytes (Aquatic Plants) to creatures like Zebra Mussels (Bivalves) to Fish (Rudd, Alewife). The current Macrophyte survey involves using customized “rakes” to help gather plants growing in the water, identifying what your find and reporting it through the iMAP system. Current efforts to identify and track mussels and various fish are less defined (at least from the perspective of needing volunteer help).

Immediate Needs:

  • There is no limit on the number of volunteers that can participate in this activity. It is something that you can do off your own waterfront or, if so inclined, you can travel to other areas of the lake, e.g. – near inflows, boat access points, etc.

Current Team Members:

  • Jen O’Shea – point person to NYSFOLA for CLA
  • Eric Randall – Subject matter expert
