CLA Position Paper on use of Benthic Mats

Conesus Lake Association Position Paper re: Weeds and use of Benthic Mats

Position: Conesus Lake, like most lakes, has portions of the shoreline where dense aquatic vegetation significantly hampers dockside recreation. In addition, the vegetation creates stagnant water which provides a haven for organisms potentially harmful to humans and promotes the growth of undesirable filamentous algae. It is paramount to the health of the lake and the satisfaction of our lake residents that we have a weed control method that is readily available, effective, and easy to use. We believe that Benthic Weed Mat use, uncontrolled by regulations, is that solution.

A Call for Donations – Our Community Needs Your Help!

As you may have noticed, our circa-1950 Vitale Office Building/Sheriff Substation is no more! This building, which served so many vital needs of our community, including a home for the Conesus Lake Association, will be replaced with a beautiful new structure this spring, funded by the Town of Livonia. As planning proceeded on the new building, many organizations working together realized that this new building could be far more than a replacement community meeting room. It will serve as a Watershed Center for Environmental Awareness and an educational center for Best Practices to protect Conesus Lake.

Best Practices to Protect Conesus Lake

What is a Best Practice?: A best practice is a technique or method that, through experience and research, has proven to reliably lead to a desired result, and achieves results superior to those achieved by other means. A commitment to using the best practices is a commitment to using all the knowledge and technology at one’s disposal to ensure success.

How are these relevant to us? : Every day our actions within the watershed of Conesus Lake have a significant impact on the overall health of the lake, either positively or negatively. We continue to strive to define and promulgate best practices pertaining to our actions: in the watershed, near the lakeside, and on the water, that will ensure we act in a manner that provides the highest certainty that we are contributing to the health, benefit and improvement of our lake. As each of us, and each of our visitors participate in varying activities from boating, to yardwork, to managing pets; each of us will need to understand the relevant best practices and apply them to our individual lives IF we are committed to protecting the lake.

Summary of Conesus Lake Fisheries Surveys 2001-2009

As seen in the CLA newsletter, Laker News, Winter 2015 issue, pages 12 and 13.

Warm water fisheries assessments using standard gangs of gill nets were conducted in Conesus Lake in September 2001, 2004, and 2009. The purpose of the surveys was to assess the fish community; the contribution of stocked fingerlings to the walleye population; estimate population characteristics of walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike; compare fish community structure to previous surveys; and guide the development of appropriate management recommendations.

What is it?

A cohesive set of actions designed to educate watershed residents on the impact they have on the lake’s water quality, and to promote lake-friendly residential best practices. Through these actions and programs, we hope to assist and inspire all watershed residents to become proactive stewards of the future health of our lake. All of US … doing our part.
